Dr. Matt Dallek
Professor of Political Management

Professor Matt Dallek is a political historian whose intellectual interests include the intersection of social crises and political transformation, the evolution of the modern conservative movement, and liberalism and its critics.

Dallek has authored or co-authored four books including, most recently:

  • Birchers: How the John Birch Society Radicalized the American Right (Basic Books, 2023);
  • Defenseless Under the Night: The Roosevelt Years and the Origins of Homeland Security (Oxford University Press, 2016), which won the Henry Adams prize from the Society for History in the Federal Government;
  • The Right Moment: Ronald Reagan’s First Victory and the Decisive Turning Point in American Politics (Oxford University Press, 2004), which appeared on the Washington Post and the Chicago Tribune’s annual best-of lists; and
  • Inside Campaigns: Elections through the Eyes of Political Professionals (co-authored; CQ/Sage, 2016), which the American Library Association’s Choice magazine selected as one of its 2016 “outstanding academic titles.”

Dallek is a frequent commentator in the national news media on politics, history and public affairs. His articles and reviews have appeared in the Washington Post, Politico, the Atlantic, Perspectives, the Journal of Policy History, and numerous other scholarly and popular publications, and his commentary has been heard on NPR, CNN International and MSNBC.

Greg Lebel

Greg Lebel, Director Emeritus of GW's Native American Political Leadership Program and Semester in Washington Politics Program, has more than forty-five years of experience in management of educational programs, political campaigns, and non-profit organizations. He has taught at the graduate and undergraduate levels for over thirty years.

Julius Hobson

Julius W. Hobson, Jr. has over 47 years of experience dealing with the Congress and Federal departments and agencies. As Senior Policy Advisor at Polsinelli, he advises and lobbies on a number of issues including health care, appropriations and budget, education, financial services, urban affairs, and taxes. Mr. Hobson previously served over 13 years as lobbyist and Director of Congressional Affairs, American Medical Association.

Peggy Flanagan

Peggy Flanagan is an enrolled member of the White Earth Band of Ojibwe and has served as the lieutenant governor of Minnesota since 2019. Previously, Peggy was a member of the Minnesota House of Representatives. Peggy is the former Executive Director of the Children's Defense Fund-Minnesota, and also served as the Director of External Affairs at Wellstone Action - the country's largest progressive training center, where she created and directed the Native American Leadership Program at the organization.
